Qinsun UV Aging Test Machine Accelerated Aging Artificial Experiment


In general, the industry requires accelerated aging test results and a good correlation between artificial accelerated aging test results and natural laboratory aging test results, but in fact these two requirements are contradictory. The artificially accelerated aging method uses a higher test temperature, a shorter wavelength light source and a larger radiation intensity than the actual environment. Although it accelerates the aging process of materials, it reduces the correlation with the aging results of natural conditions.


The UVA-340 lamp equipped with the Qinsun UV aging tester offers a new the solution. The UVA-340 UV light source can well simulate short wavelength UV light (<365 nm part) in the solar spectrum. Because UV light atshort-wavelength sunlight simulated by UVA-340 UV light source is usually the primary source for polymer damage, test results of this method are theoretically more humid correlation with natural exterior aging. To verify this, we performed a series of experiments on the correlation between natural outdoor exposure and artificially accelerated aging using a UVA-340 ultraviolet light source.

In this experiment, epoxy coating, polyurethane coating and polyester coating were selected for outdoor exposure natural and artificial ultraviolet acceleration aging experience, record changes in brilliancethis and sample color during the experiment.

Natural outdoor exposure experience

Because natural outdoor exposure varies greatly from place to place, three different typical climate types are selected here for the precise evaluation of the experience: subtropical climate (Florida Miami), desert climate (Phoenix, Arizona) and industrial climate of the northern United States (Cleveland, Ohio).

Natural outdoor exposure strictly conforms to ASTM G7 Test Standard for Natural Outdoor Exposure of Non-Metallic Materials. The back plate of the tested specimen is a 1.6 mm thick rail and the specimen holder is oriented 45° to the south.

Accelerated Artificial Weathering Test

Accelerated Artificial Weathering Test is conducted in accordance with ASTM G154 Ultraviolet Aging Test Method for Non-Metallic Materials. Theexperimental equipment is an accelerated UV aging test machine. The test box has a closed-loop system controller that can be used to adjust and control the UV light exposure intensity. The test uses a UVA-340 ultraviolet lamp with a pin zen light intensity of 343 nm and an endpoint of 295 nm. In order to eliminate the influence of different temperatures on the test results, the test temperature was set uniformly at 50 °C.

The experiment was tested under three different cycling conditions:

Condition 1: 4 h UV light exposure, 4 h condensation; the irradiation point of the UVA-340 lamp is controlled at 0.83 W/(m2 nm) at 340 nm; the temperature of the entire test cycle is regulated at 50°C. The intensity of UV radiation in this test cycle corresponds to solar radiation at noon in summer.

Condition 2: 4 h irradiation with ultraviolet lighte, 4 h condensation; the irradiation point of the UVA-340 lamp is controlled at 1.35 W/(m2.nm) at 340 nm; the temperature of the entire test cycle is regulated at 50°C. Condition 2 is basically similar to Condition 1, but the insolation is higher.

Condition 3: 4 h UV exposure (100% UV-irradiation, no condensation, no dark cycle); the irradiation point of the UVA-340 lamp is controlled at 1.35 W/(m2.nm) at 340 nm; The temperature of the entire test cycle is controlled at 50°C.
