Heavyweight! BYD's layout of perovskite battery technology

    Recently, BYD has repeatedly stated in conducting research on specific targets that with the continuous iteration and updating of crystalline silicon photovoltaic technology, it has achieved a transformation from PERC battery technology to N-type TOPCon and HJT battery technology, and actively laid out perovskite battery technology to promote battery conversion efficiency to new highs and stimulate technological innovation vitality.

    This adds another billion dollar leader to the already popular perovskite battery industry.

    Explosive perovskite batteries

    As a third-generation solar cell, perovskite batteries have advantages such as high conversion efficiency and low cost, making them a research focus for many enterprises and research teams. However, considering its poor stability and difficulty in large-scale preparation, it has always been in a calm state.

    In May 2022, Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of CATL, stated in response to investor questions that the company's research on perovskite photovoltaic cells is progressing very smoothly and is currently building a pilot line.

    The entry of billions of leading companies has rapidly increased the attention of perovskite photovoltaic cells and also gained the favor of capital.

    According to incomplete statistics, in just two years, the investment in the field of perovskite solar cells has approached 10 billion yuan, and related enterprises are also accelerating the commercialization and mass production of perovskite photovoltaic cells.

    Among them, GCL Optoelectronics completed a B+round financing of 500 million yuan in December 2022 to improve the process and equipment development of a 100MW large-sized perovskite module production line. It is reported that after the 100MW production capacity meets the standard, GCL Optoelectronics will start building a 1GW level production line, which will gradually increase to 5-10GW.

    In August 2022, Renshuo Solar completed a Series A financing of hundreds of millions of yuan for the landing of a 150MW perovskite component production line. The commissioning results of this production line will be planned for the construction of a GW level production line in the future.

    In December 2022, the 150MW perovskite photovoltaic production line for polar photovoltaics was officially put into operation. In April 2023, Polar Solar Energy invested in the construction of the world's first 1GW perovskite photovoltaic production line in Wuxi.

    In June 2023, China National Nuclear Power Corporation, a leading nuclear power enterprise, also announced that the 12th meeting of the 4th Board of Directors of the company was held on-site on June 27, 2023, and approved the proposal for the establishment of research and development projects for flexible and rigid perovskite commercial grade pilot production lines.

    Photovoltaic "top current"

    Of course, unlike the aforementioned companies, BYD is not a "newcomer" in the photovoltaic industry, but rather a "top player" that has been deeply rooted in the industry for many years.

    According to BYD's 2023 semi annual report, it has a full industry chain layout including silicon wafers, battery cells, photovoltaic modules, and photovoltaic system applications, connecting all aspects of energy from absorption, storage to application. Our group will actively lay out new technologies and promote continuous product upgrades.

    It is not difficult to see that BYD's layout of perovskite battery technology is not a desperate gamble, but a "go with the flow" in technological innovation. The profound technological accumulation also gives it more choices in the application of perovskite battery technology. For example, the photovoltaic leader Longji Green Energy has made significant breakthroughs in the combination of perovskite battery technology and crystalline silicon battery technology.

    At the Shanghai International Photovoltaic Exhibition held in May 2023, Longi Green Energy announced that its crystalline silicon perovskite stacked cell efficiency reached 31.8%; At the European Photovoltaic Exhibition in June, Longi announced an increase in efficiency to 33.5%. In November, Longi further improved its efficiency to 33.9%, setting a record for the highest efficiency of crystalline silicon perovskite stacked batteries worldwide.
